W. D. Smith (1907-1988) opened a commercial photography studio in Fort Worth in 1941, fulfilling a dream that dated back to 1927 when he first began taking photographs. Smith, working with his son, Gordon, quickly established the company as Fort Worth's finest commercial photographer. His clients included major area businesses, social clubs, fraternal organizations, individuals and families, and gonverment entities. W. D. Smith, Inc. was the company of choice for aerial photographs of the Fort Worth, Tarant County, and beyond, recording the explosive growth and urbanization experienced after World War II. The company was also known for its architectural photography and construction progress photos. In addition to documenting the physical, economic and social growth in Fort Worth, the negatives also incldue one of the largest extant collections of nineteenth and early twentieth century photographs in North Texas.

There are approximately 190,000 black and white and color negatives in the W. D. Smith Commercial Photography Negatives, dating from 1941 through 1989.
